The struggle and success of Binta Rani

Now, Binta Rani Roy is happy. She lives in a very typical Bangladeshi village named 'Pardighon' in Dinajpur in the northern districts of Bangladesh. Binta leads a peaceful life with her husband, son and two daughters. Her son is studying in a Polytechnic Institute and daughters are in a nearby school of Dinajpur. Her husband is a grocery shop. Binta says that they have could improve their living standard after a long struggle. If anybody asks the source of her happiness, Binta says, “it is only because of proper planning, hard work and patience”.

While she got married, she had to begin her family life embracing a bruising poverty. Her husband worked as a day labourer since he had no special skill. It was really very painful when she could not manage at least 2 meals for her children with the limited income of her husband.

She was fortunate to explore a way in increasing the income of her family. She was informed about the "Community Organizing Program” operated in Dinajpur YMCA.

She became a member of the program immediately and got some training on income generating activities. Completing all formalities and following all rules and regulations she got a very small loan of taka 1,000. She started to prepare puffed rice and sell it in the nearest houses and markets. In this way of hard working; she made some profit that encouraged her towards more investment and more hard work. Repaying the 1st loan, she took Taka 2,000, Taka 5,000 and Taka 8,000 as 2nd, 3rd and 4th loan and started a grocery shop with the help of her husband and at the same time she began cow-fattening business simultaneously. With the proper guidance of Dinajpur YMCA and with her toilsome work, she became successful in all her businesses gradually.

Now she is satisfied with the income that helps her in providing proper food, medicine and education for her family members. She enjoys her dignity and freedom in decision making process in her family, group and even in the community. Having determination to overcome the poverty, Binta has been successful and has proved herself as an example to others.
