A Short Introduction of
The National Council of YMCAs of Bangladesh
The National Council of YMCAs of Bangladesh, registered under the Societies Registration Act in 1974, is a collective body of Local YMCAs functioning in different parts of Bangladesh. The National Council provides common base for Local YMCAs to work and struggle together for the Common Mission of the YMCAs within the country. It is the coming together of all the Local YMCAs weak and strong, poor and reach for mutual strength, sharing and united efforts to undertake together new YMCA tasks in response to the needs of the people whom the YMCA desires to serve.
The National YMCA also provides a platform for the study and deliberation on wider national issues related to society, culture, indigenous values, etc. The insights emanating from these study and deliberations enable YMCAs to prioritized issues and engage in relevant common tasks for social and human development.
The YMCA movement in Bangladesh works with all people irrespective of their religion or caste, with a view to uplifting the socio-economic condition of people.
The YMCA in Bangladesh sees development as on 'On-going process whereby people liberate themselves from all conditions and structures which prevent the full realization of their potentials and hinder the establishment of human and equitable sets of relationship within communities. The over riding objective of this development is social justice and within this framework, the twin goals of economic growth and self-reliance.'
The YMCA believes that development necessarily demands the participation of people in the conceptualization, planning design, implementation and evaluation of all process that affect their lives. This implies that people must be responsible for the conduct of their lives and that they have the duty to make the leaders aware of their needs. It also implies that leaders must represent the construction of the people's thinking and that they are accountable to the people.
For the YMCA, this means that the YMCA must be a movement that is arisen by the popular participation of its membership in a continual rebirth of the Organization.
