The YMCA movement in Bangladesh is a socio-religious expression for humanization and humanism. It is democratic and founded on movement dimension. Principal manifestation of its philosophy is designed in its theory of self-respect, self-reliance and self- hood established on the foundation of the Paris basis and demonstrated through humanitarian program for the poor. 

Keeping in view these novel objectives, YMCA movement was initiated in Dhaka, Bangladesh in 1965. Initially, Dhaka YMCA's activities were limited among the members and all programs were organized with the help of volunteers. After the liberation was in 1971, Dhaka YMCA participated in the reconstruction worked through its relief programs and its activities spread to every sphere of the society irrespective of caste-creed-color. Side by side, its membership enrolment activities, YMCA also took-up various development-oriented programs for the welfare of the poor and helpless people in Dhaka City. 

For the last 25 years Dhaka YMCA has been successfully running its following activities: 

A. Membership Activities: 

With the view of stimulating enthusiasm, promoting Christian moral value, youth leadership and creating new thoughts and ideas in social participation by the members we are running following membership programs: 

Membership workshop/seminar/training/conference

Leadership workshop/seminar/training 

Youth workshop/youth exchange activities 

Awareness raising programs through different educational activities 

Cultural program/cultural exchange programs 

Local fund raising programs 

Annual Picnic 

Christmas Reunion 

Observance of YMCA-YWCA World Week of Prayer

B.    Income Generating Activities: 

From the very beginning Dhaka YMCA has been running following income generation activities for increasing its income and meet up its administrative membership activities cost and support to the development activities. These are: 

English Proficiency Course

TOEFL Coaching 

Diploma in Secretarial Science Course 

YMCA Guest House 

Computer Course 

Kindergarten School

C. Development Activities: 

Since 1972 Dhaka YMCA started its social work at all levels of the society. Specially, this YMCA started its work for peace and justice among the slum dwellers in Dhaka City who migrated from village and are very poor, helpless. These are: 

Community School for slum children

Stipend Program for poor but meritorious school going slum children 

Providing loan to the slum dwellers mainly women for their self-employment and augmentation of income. 

Non Formal Free Primary Education for drop out slum children 

Arrange different meetings, seminars, workshop and training for the slum people to create awareness on different issues like leadership empowerment, environment, women's right and unity and community organization. 

Women's Employment Service Project, etc.

It is mentioned that Dhaka YMCA is the pioneer & biggest YMCA in Bangladesh. The present number of members of Dhaka YMCA (full & associate) stood above 2,600. But since the inception, Dhaka YMCA has been continuing its all kind of services among its members and the community at large from its rented premises.
