Dahapara is mainly a Garo Tribal village in Durgapur Union Council and Durgapur Police Station under the Netrokona District. One of the northern Districts of Bangladesh adjacent the Indian Border under the Garo Hills of Meghalaya State of India. It is about 8 kilometers to the Northeast of Birisiri YMCA Programme Center. This Clinic is operated by Birisiri YMCA, one of the local YMCAs of the National Council of YMCAs of Bangladesh. The nearest villages of Dahapara are Badambari, Bhobanipur, Farongpara, Thausalpara, Agarpara, Gupalpur, Noluapara, Debtholy, Boroikandi, Boheratoly, Kamarkhaly, Ranikhong, Vijoypur, Kullagora, Fanda, Cholk Lengura and Baromari. Around 30,000 people live in these villages with inadequate medical facilities. Only the Dahapara Health Care Clinic is available for them for medical treatment. Most of the people of the villages are day-labourers and live from hand to mouth. Many of the people maintain their families by selling firewood collected from the woods others migrate to the cities to work as day laborers or house maids. Only a few people have sufficient land to maintain their families. The people mostly suffer from Malaria, Diarrhea, Gastritis, Chronic Dysentery, Bronchial Asthma, Cholera, Rheumatic Fever, Tuberculosis, Malnutrition, Peptic Ulcer, Typhoid, Post Pregnancy Diseases. Every year many people die out of these diseases. There are no facilities for taking care of maternity cases many women die during the childbirth. This area is a Malaria prone area, particularly Malignant Malaria. But now the scenario of this area is changing for the Dahapara Health Care Clinic which is playing a key role for extending medical facilities to the people here. During the year 2000¸ 864 Malaria Patients, 468 Diarrhea Patients, 924 Cold and Cough patients, 259 peptic ulcer patients, 217 Fever patients, 224 Dysentery patients, 149 Asthma patients and 2,377 other patients have been extended treatment in this clinic. In total 4,837 patients have been benefited by the clinic in the year 2000 free of cost. The Dahapara Health Clinic also conducts a Preventive Health Program. As we know that Preventive is better than Cure. The Health workers of this clinic visits the village households to bring up consciousness among the people. They talk on particular health subject/theme to bring about consciousness among the people and make them understanding in particular health issues like Family Planning, Deficiency of Vitamin A, Oral Redehydration therapy etc. During the year 2000 our health team visited several villages and talked to the people on different issues, 3,122 village people have been benefited from this program. Several health awareness groups has been formed in these two villages. They usually meet once in a week in a convenient place. They also maintain a weekly savings of Taka 5 each for their health treatment purpose and to build up their socio-economic condition. We also have a plan to form more Health Awareness Groups in these areas. The operation of this Free Clinic has been made possible through the generous financial support of an enthusiastic Youth Group in Tokyo who are known as 'Mandi' Group.
