The Bogra YMCA observed the ‘Ekushe’ & the International Mother Language Day on 21st February 2001, with due solemnity. With a view to pay homage to martyrs of the language movement, they brought out a bear-foot procession at the early hours of the morning from their campus to the city monument ‘Central Shaheed Minar’. The General Secretary of Bogra YMCA offered a floral wreath at the ‘Central Shaheed Minar’ on behalf of all the members staff & program beneficiaries of Bogra YMCA.
Ekushe in bangla language means 21st, on the day of 21st February 1952, infringing the proclamation of prohibition, a large number of students of Dhaka University brought out a procession demanding to establish Bangla our mother tongue as the state language of the then Pakistan. As a result, a lot of students were brutally gunned down by the Pakistani Military Junta. The street was stained in blood. At last, their demand was met and the dignity of Bangla language was attained at the expense of blood.
Today it is a glorious achievement of the Bangalees as the day has been announced as an International Mother Language Day by the United Nations from the year 2000.
